CPA CANADA INVITES PARTICIPATION IN PRE-BUDGET WEBINAR

CPA Canada is inviting members to register for a free webinar, Reviving Canada’s economic health: How can we improve fairness, opportunity and prosperity?, to be held on July 21, from 1 to 2:00 p.m. (ET).

Designed as a panel discussion, the event will cover topics such as the current state of the economy and the challenges ahead. Panelists include Jimmy Jean, vice-president, strategist and chief economist, Desjardins Group, and Robert Asselin, senior vice-resident, policy, Business Council of Canada. The event will be moderated by Heather Scoffield, Ottawa bureau chief and economic columnist at the Toronto Star.

Members will be able to submit questions and comments throughout the discussion and also provide input that will help inform the development of CPA Canada’s submission to the government’s pre-budget consultations.

SUPPORT NEEDED FOR THE PROPOSED INTERNATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY STANDARDS BOARD

A consultation is underway for the development of an International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) launched by the IFRS Foundation Trustees. CPA Canada believes the formation of an ISSB would be beneficial and is urging leaders from Canada’s private and public sectors to contribute comments on the proposal.

“Now is the time to act and provide Canadian input into the consultation effort,” says Charles-Antoine St-Jean, CPA Canada’s president and CEO. “Input at this early stage will shape the foundation of the ISSB and demonstrate strong Canadian interest and support for this major global sustainability initiative.”

The ISSB would be responsible for creating world-wide reporting standards for environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. This new international body would create a more streamlined reporting structure, replacing the complexity of the current system, which includes a number of different entities.

The deadline to add comments is July 29, 2021.

VIRTUAL EVENT FOCUSES ON REMOTE WORK STRATEGIES

Over 250 members from 31 countries tuned in to CPA Canada’s live webinar, Coaching and Supporting Your People Remotely, on June 23.

Guiding remote teams during the pandemic has been a unique challenge for CPAs,” said Marcia Maynard, chair of the CPA Canada Trinidad and Tobago Chapter Advisory Council. “This presentation was a great learning opportunity for all of us.”

The free event featured two presentations to encourage greater participation from international members in differing time zones. The sessions were led by corporate executive coach Jennifer Gervès-Keen and discussed key coaching techniques to help CPAs succeed in any work environment.

“CPAs are valued for their technical skills, but many are also team leaders,” said Karen Watson, chair of the CPA Canada Cayman Islands Chapter Advisory Council. “Communicating, coaching and mentoring are important parts of the overall CPA skill set.”
