Shawn Porter

Shawn is a partner in the Toronto office of Deloitte where he practises in the areas of international tax and mergers and acquisitions. He has advised Canadian and foreign-based multinationals on corporate and international tax planning matters for over 25 years and has extensive experience in structuring the ownership and financing of international investments. Shawn served as the director of the Tax Legislation Division in the Tax Policy Branch (Department of Finance) on an executive interchange from 2011 to 2013.

Shawn is a former instructor of international tax in the University of Waterloo’s Master of Taxation Programme. He has addressed the Canadian Tax Foundation, the International Fiscal Association and the Tax Executives Institute, among other organizations, on a variety of subjects including Canada’s tax treaties, the tax and accounting aspects of derivatives, foreign exchange and treasury operations, form and substance in tax law, international tax policy and transactions of interest.

Shawn is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors of the Canadian Tax Foundation and a Council Member of the International Fiscal Association (Canadian Branch) and he has served as a member of the Joint Committee on Taxation of the Canadian Bar Association and Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada). He is also a member of the Editorial Board of International Tax Planning by Federated Press, a former member of the Fiscal and Tax Competitiveness Council of the CD Howe Institute and is active in the Waterloo Centre for Taxation in a Global Economy.

Shawn graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Accounting and he is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant (CPA, CA).
