Tax Committees

Learn about the various tax committees devoted to developing sound tax policies and administrative practices for Canadians and Canadian businesses.

Through the Joint Committee on Taxation, Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) collaborates with the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) to offer the federal government input on tax laws. For more than 70 years, this collaboration of CPA Canada and the Canadian Bar Association has regularly offered input to the Department of Finance on the technical aspects of new tax legislation. We also suggest improvements to simplify and improve current tax laws.

Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) identifies and addresses income and commodity tax matters affecting small and medium accounting organizations in Canada through its Small and Medium Tax Practitioner (SMP) Committee. This committee acts as a resource to enable CPA Canada to respond to the needs of CPAs who own or work in smaller firms, by considering existing and proposed government activities in income and commodity taxation from the viewpoint of small and medium-sized tax practitioners.

Comprising the tax learning leaders of Canada’s largest national professional accounting firms, the Tax Learning and Development Advisory Group helps ensure that CPA Canada equips tax professionals with knowledge and skills that meet the current and future needs of today’s employers, whether in industry, public practice or the public sector.

Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada)’s Tax Advisory Committee (formerly Tax Policy Committee) identifies, raises and helps resolve tax policy and administration issues with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Department of Finance, through both formal submissions and regular meetings with CRA and Finance officials. Committee members include the tax leaders of Canada’s largest accounting firms and representatives from industry, academia and small and medium-sized practitioners.

Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) advocates for improvements to the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive program through its SR&ED Tax Committee. This committee advocates on behalf of CPAs for sound tax policy and administration related to SR&ED tax credits and other incentives for innovation. Composed of SR&ED tax advisors from some of Canada’s larger accounting firms, the committee identifies issues regarding the SR&ED program and related policies and provides a forum for engaging with federal and provincial tax authorities and legislators.

Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) advocates for better indirect tax policy and administration in Canada through its CPA Canada Commodity Tax Committee. This committee gives Canada’s CPAs a voice in influencing indirect tax, customs and trade policy and administration in Canada. Composed of representatives from some of Canada’s larger accounting firms, the committee aims to identify, raise and help resolve commodity tax issues with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Finance Canada.

Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) identifies and raises—and works to resolve—tax issues and policies affecting practitioners in industry through the CPA Canada Industry Tax Committee. Comprised of senior tax executives from large Canadian businesses, this committee acts as a resource to ensure CPA Canada considers and supports the needs of tax practitioners in industry regarding tax administration, tax policy, tax education and tax accounting.

This committee helps CPA Canada deliver strategic leadership in identifying the foundational tax knowledge and skills that income tax professionals need. The committee also provides feedback on CPA Canada’s tax learning initiatives and recommends new programs and services as needed. Members include representatives from industry, public practice and academia.
