Launched this month, the new season of Foresight: The CPA Podcast puts the focus on the impact of sustainability and how it relates to the CPA profession.

Each of the six episodes explores topics that are top-of-mind for members, including questions like:

  • What are the skills needed for CPAs to future-proof their career?
  • Are we seeing a shift from shareholder capitalism to stakeholder capitalism?

In the first episode, available now, guest Bettina Pierre-Gilles, CEO of Luxeum Renewables Group Inc., shares her experience bringing renewable power to Canada’s oil and gas sector and explains why she believes we’re entering a kind of golden age for CPAs.

Upcoming episodes include a discussion with Blake Phillips, director of the School of Accounting and Finance at the University of Waterloo, on the new trend of integrating sustainability with financial management and a ground-breaking new bachelor’s program unique in Canada. SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT: GHG PROTOCOL EXPLORED IN NEW REPORT

The Institute for Sustainable Finance (ISF) and CPA Canada have collaborated on a report that explores the evolution of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) which supplies the standards commonly used by companies to measure and report their GHG emissions. Titled A Closer Look at the GHG Protocol – Observations and Implications for Standard Setters and Regulators, the report finds that while the GHG Protocol has been important and helpful, more work is required at a global level to ensure that the GHG Protocol standards and guidance meet evolving stakeholder needs and expectations.

Securities regulators domestically and internationally are moving to make emission disclosure mandatory for many entities, and the International Sustainability Standards Board proposes that the GHG Protocol’s standards be applied to measure emissions. Thus, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how emissions are measured and disclosed.

PAPER RELEASED: EXPLORING SYSTEMS INNOVATION FROM A CPA PERSPECTIVE

CPA Canada partnered with Ivey’s Innovation North to develop , Systems Innovations: Reimagining the Role of the Professional Accountant in Today’s Complex Environment.

The paper demonstrates why it’s important for CPAs to go beyond traditional approaches to corporate innovation, which often reduces a problem to its core elements, but doesn’t meet the needs of complex and volatile business environments.

Systems innovation consists of integrating systems thinking with traditional approaches to innovation, where the goal is to “set trends, rather than follow them.” The paper provides CPAs with a foundation for building skills in this area, helping to foster a forward-thinking instinct to be proactive rather than reactive.

“Today’s volatile business environment is pushing for innovation with better foresight and an integrated mindset to create systemic opportunities centred around a shared purpose. As broad minded and forward-thinking professionals, CPAs are well suited to catalyze on systems innovation,” says CPA Davinder Valeri, director of strategy, risk and performance for CPA Canada.
