Steve Spooner

With 35 years in the high-tech and telecommunications sector, Steve has a wealth of experience in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), corporate governance, strategic business planning and operational leadership.

As CFO for Mitel Networks, a $1.3B, 3200 person cloud and premises-based communications solutions company, Steve has global responsibility for finance, legal, information technology, M&A, investor relations, leasing, procurement, facilities and internal audit. His past experience includes roles as CEO, COO and CFO of both emerging and established industry players including tenures at Digital, Wang, SHL Systemhouse, CrossKeys Systems, Stream Intelligent Networks and Wysdom.

Steve has significant capital raising experience, most notably having led one of the largest IPO’s in Ottawa’s history, when Mitel raised $147M on NASDAQ in 2010; and raising debt and equity financing for the purchase of InterTel (a 1900 person $460M company), Aastra (a 1900 person $585M company) and Mavenir (a 1300 person $130M company). In addition, Steve has also previously led a cross-border NASDAQ/TSX IPO in 1997. Steve currently oversees the company’s M&A program and has extensive experience in M&A targeting, due diligence, negotiation, valuation, deal structuring and post deal integration, having acquired or sold over 20 companies.

Steve was a board member and chair of the Audit Committee for Magor Communications Corporation, and also sits on the boards of key Mitel subsidiaries. He is active in the Ottawa community, particularly supporting health care. He was chair of the Finance and Audit Committee of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation as well as a member of the executive committee and nominating committee. He is a frequent speaker, spokesperson and fundraiser for the Foundation.

Steve has sat on several strategic advisory boards for emerging tech companies and is a former member of the board of the Canadian Wireless Telecom Association and former chair of the CWTA’s Fixed Wireless Committee. He currently sits on the Sprott School of Business Advisory Board.

Steve obtained his accounting designation in 1982, was elected a Fellow Chartered Accountant in 2011 and received his FCPA in 2013. He is a graduate of Carleton University (Bachelor of Commerce 1980). He also holds the ICD.D professional director designation (2009) from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
