About Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada

Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) is the national organization established to support a unified Canadian accounting profession. We represent highly qualified professionals who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to providing the highest standards of accounting, ethics and best business practices.

We represent Canada’s CPAs and members of the three legacy designations (Chartered Accountant, Certified Management Accountant and Certified General Accountant), all of which have unified or are unifying under the CPA banner. Once unification is complete, Canada’s CPA designation will be more than 190,000 members strong.

CPA Canada is a progressive and forward-thinking organization whose members bring a convergence of shared values, diverse business skills, exceptional talents, management disciplines and innovative thinking to the accounting field.  Once the profession is fully unified, CPA Canada will be one of the five largest accounting bodies in the world. This will significantly enhance our ability to influence international accounting, audit and assurance standards, and to ensure that these standards are appropriate for Canadian market needs.

The Canadian CPA is the pre-eminent, globally respected business and accounting designation.

Evolution into a unified profession

In January 2012, following eight months of member and stakeholder consultation, the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), the Society of Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) and Certified General Accountants of Canada (CGA-Canada) issued A Framework for Uniting the Canadian Accounting Profession under a new Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. CPA Canada was established by CICA and CMA Canada on January 1, 2013, under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, to support Canadian provincial accounting bodies that were unifying under the CPA banner. CGA-Canada integrated with CPA Canada on October 1, 2014, completing the unification of Canada’s accounting profession at the national level.

The timing for integration and use of the CPA designation will vary from province to province because the profession is provincially regulated and therefore mergers will occur at different times.
