Group description

Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada)’s Pension and Investment Management Committee reviews, monitors, reports and, where appropriate, approves or recommends to the Human Resources and Compensation Committee and/or the audit committee on:

  • pension plan matters
  • investment of pension plan defined benefit (DB) component assets
  • investment management framework for defined contribution (DC) component assets
  • investment of CPA Canada corporate surplus funds
  • policies including but not limited to:
    • CPA Canada’s responsibilities as the pension plan sponsor
    • fiduciary responsibilities as pension plan administrator

Key responsibilities

  • recommend the design, establishment and termination of the pension plan
  • review and recommend governance structure and statement of objectives
  • establish committee processes and procedures
  • appoint and or terminate, as well as monitor the performance of and adherence to established policies and guidelines, of:
    • DB and DC investment managers
    • DC record-keepers
    • custodians/trustees
    • actuaries
  • review and confirm compliance with all regulatory requirements
  • review and recommend DB funding policy and DC contributions
  • review and approve audited financial statements of the pension plans administered by CPA Canada

Time commitment

Attend meetings held at least twice each year. Special meetings are called as needed and the agenda for each meeting is circulated in advance.


  • keen interest in pension matters
  • solid understanding of:
    • pension fund in­vesting
    • pension risks
    • the fundamental principles that guide management of pension assets
  • knowledge or familiarity with Canadian Association of Pension Supervisory Authorities (CAPSA)/Capital Accumulation Programs (CAP) guidelines and pension legislation
  • previous pension committee or pension industry experience
