Ian Sherman: Inspired chair of our Tax Education Task Force

Our knowledgeable and dedicated volunteer leads the task force to revolutionize tax education with an enriched new tax course and elearning technology.

Our tax education program is the gold standard in Canada — and much of its success is due to the devotion and direction of our volunteers. Among the hard-working, talented CPAs who help us design and deliver our lifelong learning in tax offerings, Ian Sherman is a standout.

As a senior tax partner with Ernst & Young, Ian is a well-known and highly respected tax professional with 28 years of public accounting experience, most of those years specializing in taxation.  He is EY’s Ottawa Office Tax Practice Market leader and runs an extremely busy practice, but he is still able to devote an enormous amount of time, effort and passion toward bettering tax education in Canada.

Ian started his work with us as a group study leader for our In-Depth Tax Course, later became a lecturer and then a member of our Tax Courses Committee. When he became chair of this committee in 2007, the direction of tax education in Canada shifted dramatically.

Ian brought a bold new vision for the In-Depth Tax Course, and the Tax Education Task Force was created under his leadership. The task force was charged to develop recommendations for us on how tax education in Canada, and particularly the In-Depth Tax Course, could be improved to better serve the tax and business education needs of members in tax. Based on the task force’s findings and recommendations, students of the re-engineered In-Depth Tax Course — launched in 2012 — enjoy an enriched experience which is delivered using the latest learning technologies and techniques.

With his passion for inspiring and instilling change, Ian has made a huge investment in time and a commitment to change tax education in Canada for the better. As the first cohort of In-Depth Tax Course students complete their certificates this year, Ian continues to infuse our tax education development with his dedication and spirit.
