Principal, Strategy, Risk and Performance - Research, Guidance and Support - Toronto

CPA Canada is seeking to add a key position to our Research and Guidance department.

CPA Canada is the national organization representing the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) profession in Canada.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Strategy, Risk and Performance in our Research, Guidance and Support (RGS) department, the incumbent will contribute to develop research, guidance, and thought leadership with a goal of supporting our members today and preparing them for the future. The areas of focus include research and thought leadership on emerging trends, opportunities that impact member in  business and public sector and develop a portfolio of resources in the areas of management accounting for strategy, risk, performance management for both the members in business and public sector. The individual will work in close collaboration with other members of the RGS group and, where appropriate, across CPA Canada and with our provincial partners. Advise CPA Canada on best practices for management accounting opportunities that impact member and business, and public sector to achieve business outcomes.

In this role, responsibilities will include, but are not be limited to the following:

  • Providing guidance and thought leading research in areas of strategy, risk and performance management that can significantly disrupt current practices, or spur innovation, in business and or public sectors such as the drivers of change (technology, environment, global, social and political);
  • Providing leadership, both as a technical expert and skilled facilitator, to bring together people and ideas, resulting in timely and high-quality research, guidance and thought leadership;
  • Maintaining an understanding of technical and business trends in Canada and globally which may impact current and future members working in business and government;
  • Pursuing relevant professional development opportunities to build subject matter expertise in public sector and management accounting (more broadly, strategy, risk and performance management for management to make informed decision making in achieving business goals).
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with relevant external stakeholders to enhance the profile of CPA Canada and the Canadian accounting profession
  • Providing support to volunteer advisory groups by planning, preparing agendas and supporting materials and reviewing meeting outcomes;
  • Developing research, guidance and support materials (e.g., blogs, alerts, briefings, guides, summaries, webinars, thought leadership) aimed at helping stakeholders better understand and address key public sector and business issues (as it relates to this portfolio);
  • Overseeing translation, publication and promotion of resources, guidance, and thought leadership, working collaboratively with other departments at CPA Canada;
  • Organizing and participate in relevant webinars, panel discussions, and presentations.
  • Managing designated projects including facilitating meetings of the volunteer advisory groups and committees involved in the project/initiative.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • A CPA designation
  • 7 - 10 years of relevant business experience in the areas of management accounting and public sector accounting;
  • Ability to conduct analyses and research;
  • Knowledge of trends to build strategy;
  • Knowledgeable about CPA practices and sufficiently adaptable and experienced to undertake various senior level tasks as required;
  • Ability to identify, understand and work with others to propose solutions to complex issues;
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational/project management skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to liaise effectively with senior members of the CPA profession and other external stakeholders, including regulators, accounting firms, academics, other professional associations etc.;
  • Commitment to quality processes and products;
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to respond quickly to changing demands and new issues;
  • Intellectual curiosity and keen desire to learn;
  • Understanding and awareness of drivers that could impact business.
