Principal, Small and Medium-sized Practices - Member Development and Support – Toronto

CPA Canada is seeking to add a key position to our Member Development and Support department.

CPA Canada is the national organization representing the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) profession in Canada.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Lead Principal, Member in Practice, Audit Assurance & Reporting, this position provides input and recommendations on the evolution of existing products, services and resources and the introduction of new products, services and resources aimed at helping small and medium practitioners (SMPs) succeed especially through the development of the Professional Engagement Guide (PEG).

In this role, responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing deep knowledge of the audit methodology and the step-by-step guidance for practitioners use in CPAC’s PEG and Quality Assurance manual (QAM);
  • Providing recommendation in the engagement methodology and quality control review use in CPAC’s PEG and QAM;
  • Gaining a deep understanding in a range of assurance and audit topics and become a subject matter resource in a selected number of those, to support small and medium practitioners across Canada
  • Developing an understanding of practitioner’s challenges in various areas of their practice and their evolving needs for guidance and other support.   
  • Developing partnerships with other stakeholders who have complementary interests within the product portfolio;
  • Representing Member Development and Support on committees involved in developing resources to meet member needs such as the Public Practice Advisory Services Sub-Committee
  • Collaborating with colleagues in Standards, Research, Guidance and Support, as well as other operating groups across CPA Canada
  • Working closely with other senior staff in MDS, other CPA Canada departments and Provincial Accounting Bodies to ensure appropriate research is conducted and monitor the continuing professional development needs of members/customers in public practice, focusing on SMPs.
  • In conjunction with the Lead Principal, leading and managing volunteer advisory committees, including chairing and facilitating meetings
  • Spearheading different Advisory Groups (SMP, PEG) focused on the development and delivery of quality and relevant products, services and resources to assist SMPs in managing their practice;
  • Providing best practices on products and services for practitioners on how to perform assurance and compilation engagements and how to solve practice management issues relating primarily to SMPs.
  • In conjunction with the Lead Principal, overseeing all aspects of program design and execution which includes:
    • Working closely with program developers such as subject matter experts and interactive e-learning specialists;
    • Working closely with marketing team to ensure best possible reach and commercial success of products;
    • Working closely with program managers to ensure programs are executed in a timely, professional and cost-effective way.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • Must have a CPA designation and possess a minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in public practice, preferably a Small and Medium-sized Practice
  • Must possess strong audit technical skills and solid knowledge of accounting standards, internal controls and risk
  • Capacity to think about requirements from a strategic perspective
  • Strong project management, analytical and technical skills; solid judgment and problem solving
  • Exceptional and well-honed interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills
  • Team player with ability to work with multiple internal groups and external stakeholders in fast-paced, high-energy environment
  • Keen interest and awareness of recent and emerging trends in the profession
  • Ability to manage multiple large projects/products
  • Knowledge and experience in adult education including development of educational programs is preferable
