Principal, Corporate Communications – Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs – Toronto

CPA Canada is seeking to add a key position to our Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs department.

CPA Canada is the national organization representing the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) profession in Canada and internationally.

The Opportunity

Reporting to and working closely with the Director of Corporate Communications, the Principal will provide strategic corporate and member communications leadership for CPA Canada. This includes focusing on executive communications; developing and delivering effective integrated communication campaigns for both internal and external audiences; and providing oversight and direction relating to content and best practices. The principal also oversees the development of CPA Canada’s Annual Report.

The Principal oversees the development of corporate and member communications messages, executive speeches and presentations, talking points and briefing documents and ensures that supporting research is conducted effectively and properly. They must also provide strategic planning, counsel and writing support for special strategic projects as required and ensure all communication outputs and vehicles support CPA Canada’s culture, exemplify its customer focus and produce results in alignment with the organization’s business objectives and priorities.

*The Principal also serves as back-up to the Director, Corporate Communications 

In this role, responsibilities will include, but are limited to the following:

Executive Communications Strategy and Planning

Provides leadership in the development and execution of executive corporate and member communication strategies and related communications. This includes overseeing and maintaining quality control during the execution of content for executive speeches and convocations, internal digital channels (such as Yammer), blogs, op eds and articles. 

  • Accomplished by working directly with the CPA Canada governance team and others within CPA Canada;
  • Develops relationships with colleagues across the organization to understand initiatives and activities to effectively support executives and Board chair and vice-chair;
  • Acts as the project lead and gatekeeper for executive and member communications;
  • Ensures that the tone and voice of writing/messaging is adjusted for different audiences while effectively conveying organizational messaging and brand;
  • Reviews production of final deliverables to ensure consistency, creativity and quality;
  • Ensures that executive communication strategies incorporate the use of traditional and digital channels to support the strategies.

Annual Report Development Oversight

Oversees CPA Canada’s Annual Report development providing direction and guidance for the Senior Corporate Writer on researching and writing:

  • Seeks initial direction from relevant members of the executive team and president and CEO;
  • Once Annual Report outline is developed, guide the Senior Corporate Writer on input coordination from various teams guaranteeing that the timeline is being followed;
  • Ensure that the design and video materials meet the high-quality standards expectations;
  • Oversees feedback and the editing process;
  • Review the senior corporate writer work guaranteeing that the report is accurate and on message;
  • Ensures that requirements for the Annual Report are met (web posting, printed copies etc.).

Membership Communications

Oversees development and execution of member communication strategies and plans and research assignments as required to support both.

  • Provides strategic planning and counsel for member communications strategic projects
  • Identifies the desired communications outcomes;
  • Determines the audience, messaging and appropriate communication channels and audience for each strategy;
  • Demonstrates an ability to inspire and influence across the organization to gain alignment and support on recommended communications strategies and tactics.

Research Oversight

Oversees the Manager, Research, providing direction, guidance, and counsel:

  • Ensures that other CPA Canada departments know they call upon Manager, Research for advice and guidance;
  • Build a good rapport with the Manager, Research by seeking regular updates about planned research initiatives and departments and stakeholders’ objectives/needs around the information;
  • Ensure that the research outcomes hoped for are identified along with best corresponding communications approaches for the initiative;
  • Ensure that possible risks related to CPA Canada’s research are being carried out are identified; 
  • Ensures that proper communication protocols with stakeholders such as the provincial bodies are followed;
  • Ensures Manager is adhering to timelines and schedule
  • Provide quality standards guidance to the Manager making sure that quality is achieved, and the best approaches are being utilized.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • Degree or Diploma in English, communications, journalism or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in a related role.
  • Superior project management skills.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent listening and oral/written interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with executive-level management.
  • A strong work ethic, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple complex projects.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, quality and customer service in a deadline-based environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Adobe Acrobat, and Internet-based research and communications.
  • Preferably knowledge of Canadian Press writing standards.
