Principal, Content – Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs - Toronto

CPA Canada is seeking to add a key position to our Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs department.

CPA Canada is the national organization representing the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) profession in Canada.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Communications, the Principal, Content is responsible for leading development and working on implementation of CPA Canada’s content generation strategies (in conjunction with the Principal, Production). The Principal ensures that content strategies and editorial decisions, support CPA Canada’s key messages and business objectives. The Principal will play a leading role in the development and management of first-class content that is created for Pivot by the editorial and design teams of the organization’s external partner, St. Joseph Media.

In this role, responsibilities will include, but are not be limited to the following:

  • Lead and implement an integrated strategic content plan to advance CPA Canada’s mission; broaden brand awareness of its thought leadership programs, products and services and priorities; and increase the visibility of its content programs across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Build and optimize a content communications strategy that will allow CPA Canada to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted audiences, including CPA members and key influencers.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize external communications opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Act as a communications advisor to leadership.

Communications Strategy and Operations

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop and execute an integrated CPA Canada content strategy—ensuring the best use of resources, channels, optimal structure and workflow.
  • Manage relationship with and advise CPA Canada partner St. Joseph Media—specifically its magazine team, which creates Pivot six times a year for CPA Canada members.
  • Work with CPA Canada team leaders engaged in communications and content work.
  • Play a critical role in ensuring that CPA Canada’s thought leadership and business objectives are achieved.
  • Engage and listen to the voices of multiple key stakeholders with respect in order to make the right, timely decisions that advance CPA Canada’s communications initiatives.
  • Manage and deliver relevant feedback from key CPA Canada stakeholders to ensure Pivot’s editorial team is delivering, on schedule, the best magazine for CPA Canada members.
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize communications and publishing opportunities.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the magazine function including budgeting, planning, advertising and staff development.
  • Demonstrate exceptional financial, editorial and operational acumen.
  • Recognizes and promotes excellence in content creation and is a skilled communicator and collaborator.
  • Technological expertise to understand the needs of a fast-paced digital environment.

Team Development/Management

  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives and conduct performance appraisals.


  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Newsroom experience is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a senior communications management role, either in-house or with an agency or media company.
  • Broad print and digital communications expertise.
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning content to achieve high impact.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in order to drive results, motivate and lead a team
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, including the proven ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously with multiple audiences and against deadlines
  • Thrive in a fast paced, on-time deliverable environment
  • Communication skills both written and verbal and consensus building skills
  • Critical thinking and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to work through conflict, build trust, and influence outcomes through outstanding interpersonal skills at all levels
  • Conceptual thinker with creative and strong business acumen
  • Fluency in French considered an asset
