Issues Manager – Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs

CPA Canada is seeking to add a key position to our Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs department.

CPA Canada is the national organization representing the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) profession in Canada.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Communications, the Issues Manager will work with colleagues within their own department and others at CPA Canada to effectively manage risks to the organization or opportunities that arise. This position will focus on protecting the CPA Canada brand or enhancing the recognized relevance and value of the organization among key stakeholders.

The Manager will be responsible for day-to-day issues monitoring, reporting any identified risks and opportunities to the Director, Communications and Senior Vice-President, Marketing Communications and Public Affairs and executing any required responses. The Manager will prepare Issues Briefs; assist in the development of an Environmental Scan; develop messaging for media interviews or presentations; provide media relations and/or public affairs support if required when the situation dictates; work with the social media team to provide social media messaging advice; and assist in ensuring communications messaging is consistent across the organization. 

 In this role, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead issues management on behalf of CPA Canada, identifying, monitoring and executing response strategies
  • Issue identification and tracking
  • Daily media monitoring
  • Oversee production of, and have approved by Director, Communications, a monthly Environmental Scan that highlights and tracks issues of importance and activities of key domestic and international accounting bodies, standard setters, regulators and other stakeholders (globalization; standard setting; regulation; other reputational issues)
  • Produce and disseminate Issue Briefs on various matters
  • Work with Director, Communication and others within CPA Canada to develop strategies/messaging to protect the CPA Canada brand and its reputation or to promote its recognized relevance and value
  • Work closely with the Director, facilitate national and provincial processes to manage risks, opportunities and issues of importance to the accounting profession
  • Provide advice and assist with development of CPA Canada crisis communications planning and execution
  • Play an active role in summarizing an issue for CPA Canada employees and the development of key messages pertaining to the matter
  • In partnership with the Director, provide advice and counsel to ensure the CPA reputation strategy is consistent across the CPA profession.
  • Provide strategic advice and counsel to leaders across CPA Canada, ensuring all communication outputs support the CPA mission, vision and values, reinforcing and strengthening the corporate reputation
  • When required, support the coaching of CPA Canada corporate spokespeople, and work with media relations manager to ensure organization has trained subject matter experts available for media or stakeholder inquiries.
  • May be called upon to act as back-up contact for CPA Canada’s media relations manager

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following education, skills and experience:

  • Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications or other relevant discipline      
  • 5-7 years in a communications role with experience in issues management as well as providing direct communications counsel and support to senior executives or politicians       
  • Proven ability to engage, connect and build an engaged audience across multiple channels
  • Proven ability to coach and advise senior executives/politicians as well as members of the immediate team, provide candid counsel and strategic advice
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in order to drive results, motivate and lead a team     
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, including the proven ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Thrive in a fast paced, on-time deliverable environment
  • Creative and proactive communication skills both written and verbal and consensus building skills
  • Critical thinking and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work through conflict, build trust, and influence outcomes through outstanding interpersonal skills at all levels
  • Experience working in a mainstream newsroom
