Director, Professional Development

The Member Development and Support (MD&S) portfolio ensures the delivery of products and services that support members in the business communities they serve. The MD&S team is responsible for anticipating and producing professional development programs, services and many of CPA Canada’s leading publications to its members. The team is also responsible for assisting CPA Canada’s contribution to social and economic development.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Vice President, MD&S, this role is significant in the promotion of the CPA Canada’s business products and services for the market.  From idea inception, development, production through to delivery, these products are market leaders, anticipatory in nature to meet members’ future needs, creative in delivery and accessible to all members across Canada.   The programs enhance members’ career advancement and add value the organizations in which they work.  

As an experienced business leader, the Director will contribute to the overall success of MD&S and CPA Canada, its partners and members. Working closely with the VP, MD&S, the Director will transform the culture of the MD&S team to a business oriented, high performing team that interacts cross functionally with CPA Canada teams to produce quality services and products.  The Director will manage the professional program budget together with the VP, MD&S and other CPA Canada teams to achieve or exceed key financial performance measures.  

The Director will make operational decisions regarding program delivery, being guided by member needs.  Strategic decisions or decisions that potentially impact key stakeholders and/or other departments will be done in collaboration with the VPs.

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following;

  • Leadership/Management of Professional Development Team:
  • Produce an integrative approach to professional learning
  • Foster creativity in product development; encourage innovative thought in ways to engage members in the profession
  • Establish a culture of collaboration, open communication, accountability and timely decision making within the professional development team
  • Oversee strong staff development through recruitment and retention, performance management and employee engagement
  • Prioritize work activities of staff and plan adequately for peaks and valleys in team workload
  • Cultivate and create collaborative relationships across all departments at CPA Canada, contractors and provincial/regional partners

Duties:

  • Identify trends and emerging issues to ensure that CPA Canada resources are ready and available prior to the members’ anticipation of their needs
  • Effectively deploy research and guidance and professional development materials into the professional development programs and products
  • Choose target markets for new or existing products
  • Make technological choices
  • Determine timing of a product’s introduction and pricing
  • Work on market positioning of products, marketing strategy and types of messaging to be utilized
  • Manage key stakeholder relations including partnership opportunities
  • Infuse a culture of creativity and innovation for the development of learning and development opportunities for the anticipated needs of CPA’s
  • Monitor performance of professional development team and provide regular operational reporting to the VP
  • Accountable for managing the professional development program delivery budget
  • Participate in national committees as appropriate

The Candidate

The Ideal Candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • CPA Designation
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in adult education
  • Experienced leader of commercializing professional knowledge, programs and services
  • Highly developed business acumen and change management skills
  • Highly proactive and innovative
  • Strong project management, analytical and technical skills; solid judgment and problem solving skills
  • Exceptional and well-honed interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills
  • Excellent customer service orientation
  • Team player with ability to work with multiple internal groups and external stakeholders in fast-paced, high-energy environment
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Hands-on, willing and able to “roll up the sleeves” to get things done
  • Driven towards self-development and self-direction
