Biography

Joan joined the CPA Canada Board of Directors in September 2018.

She has more than 25 years’ experience in board and stakeholder relations and has been a practising lawyer and strategic consultant with an expertise in governance. Joan is the vice-president, External Affairs and Corporate Counsel at NorQuest College.

She has extensive board involvement and currently serves as chair of the Growth and Innovation Committee, and member of the Governance Committee at Covenant Health (2016-present) and as a member of the Governance Committee at the Edmonton International Airport (2016-present). Joan was appointed as the board chair of ATB Financial, effective January 1, 2019, and previously served as chair of the organization's Governance and Conduct Review Committee (2008-2018).

She has given numerous presentations on governance and is an active instructor at the Institute of Corporate Directors, Rotman School of Management/University of Alberta School of Business, in the Directors Education Program.

In 2008, Joan was awarded with the honorary Queen’s Counsel designation for her outstanding contributions to the legal profession and her community.
