In the Internet age, we’ve seen quite a few new trends when it comes to learning and performance. First there was online learning and mobile learning. Then came open-source learning and massive open online courses, followed by innovative methods such as gamification.

The most recent trend is nano-learning — a method for busy, on-the-go professionals. It’s an efficient model that requires minimal time commitment and can help users both achieve higher retention and better apply the concepts.


Today, virtual teams are the norm, and organizations are becoming leaner in operations, all in an effort to do more with less. The concept of nano-learning is the same, where less is more. Nano-learning, also known as micro-learning, usually involves two- to fifteen-minute increments of information you access as needed. Each clip of information focuses on one key learning objective, which can be referenced often for just-in-time learning or a refresher. If you’ve ever searched for a quick “how-to” video on YouTube, watched it, followed the instructions and applied, you’ve participated in nano-learning.

So, imagine you’re working on a merger and acquisition (M&A) deal with a client. Discussions are veering toward a complex financing structure that you’re familiar with, but you’re not up to speed on the details. Nano-learning would allow you to quickly access, for example, either a 10-minute refresher on the financing structure, associated commentary or case study highlights that will help you close the deal.

Is it effective? Both research (such as Dale’s Cone of Experience) and common sense tell us that it’s best to learn something when you’re actually going to be using it.

Nano-learning is not yet an accepted form of earning continuing professional development (CPD). But as of May 2015, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) proposed the addition of nano-learning and blended-learning for continuing professional accounting programs. So, not only is nano-learning a powerful way of feeding the mind, it will soon help you meet CPD requirements.
