Transition guidelines for the Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF)

If you are a student completing the Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF), follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth transition for your education path towards the certificate.

Effective January 1, 2018, the CPA profession will no longer deliver ACAF applied courses. The profession will continue to offer ACAF prerequisite requirements and technical courses through CPA preparatory courses, while all ACAF courses will be delivered through accredited programs and courses offered by post-secondary institutions (PSIs). Beginning September 2017, select PSIs will begin offering the entire ACAF program. Contact your provincial/regional CPA body for additional information.

ACAF national examination

The ACAF National Examination is a new program requirement that will come into effect in 2018 and will be administered through the CPA provincial/regional bodies.

Depending on your progress in the program, you may be exempt from completing the ACAF National Examination:

  • If you have completed the technical courses, you must complete the Business Applications applied course before December 2017 to be exempt from the ACAF National Examination requirement. You may still register for any remaining applied courses this year through your CPA provincial/regional body, but will need to transfer to a PSI to complete the program beginning January 2018. If you expect to finish the program by the end of 2017 you will not need to transfer to a PSI.

Students who unsuccessfully attempt the Business Applications course-end examination before December 2017 will be allowed to take the ACAF National Examination in January 2018 without taking the equivalent Business Application course offered by PSIs. Those students who are also unsuccessful on the ACAF National Examination will need to transfer to a PSI to complete the equivalent course, and will need to successfully complete the ACAF National Examination requirement to complete the ACAF program.

  • If you have not completed the technical courses, you will need to fulfill the ACAF National Examination requirement to earn the ACAF. You may still register for courses in the remaining 2017 semester through your CPA provincial/regional body, but you will need to transfer to a PSI to complete the program beginning January 2018.
