New CPA certification program integrates financial reporting and tax education

One of the key aspects of the discussions regarding the unification of the accounting profession in Canada has been the certification process for the unified body. In October 2012, CPA Canada released its much-anticipated Competency Map, which sets out the knowledge, skills, and proficiency levels expected of Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) candidates.

In the February 2013 edition of Canadian Tax Foundation’s Canadian Tax Focus, Mark Dumalski of Deloitte discusses how the Competency Map transforms the certification process for professional accountants. Some of the most notable changes involve the integration of financial reporting and tax education and the new flexibility allowing the level of tax knowledge required for certification to vary based on the candidate’s choices.
