Fly like the jet set

Calgary-based accountant and entrepreneur Roger Jewett is the CEO of Jump On Flyaways, a new tour company that contracts idle jets from charter airlines to offer high-flying weekend getaways at reduced prices.

What do you do with a fleet of corporate 737s sitting, unused, on the tarmac from Friday to Sunday? If you're Calgary-based accountant and entrepreneur Roger Jewett, you launch Jump On Flyaways, a tour company that contracts idle jets from charter airlines at discounted rates, schedules high-flying weekend getaways, and markets the deals to consumers via social media, Groupon-style. In other words, the trips only happen if enough people sign on for the ride. Since taking off last year, Jump On offers have included a swanky Calgary to Kelowna, BC, flight, including wine tour, for $249 return, and a Calgary to Phoenix hockey "experience," including VIP tickets to a Coyotes game and meet-and-greet with team players and executives. "As a small company we have the ability to try new things, so why not?" says CEO Jewett.
