This award recognizes the commitment and extraordinary contributions made by our volunteers to the tax community and the Canadian tax system. The award is given to a volunteer who has demonstrated dedicated volunteer service and whose contributions have made a significant impact on improving the Canadian tax system.

The winner will be announced at the CPA Canada Volunteer Awards Gala in Toronto on Wednesday, October 26, 2016.

Hugh Neilson, FCPA, FCA

Hugh provides tax consultation in many diverse areas, including business structuring and restructuring, negotiations with CRA auditors and appeals officers, tax-effective compensation strategies and strategies for tax-effective personal, family and estate tax planning. He has taught taxation courses for CPA Canada in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and has presented at the National Conference on Income Taxes, Banff Small Practitioners Forum, CA Forum North, the Canadian Tax Foundation’s Prairie Provinces Tax Conference and at CPA Canada’s 2015 The ONE Conference.

Hugh has published articles in Law Now and Lawyers’ Weekly, and appears regularly in Video Tax News. He is a member of CPA Alberta’s Members in Tax Working Group and CPA Canada’s Income Tax Education Committee and Small and Medium Practitioner Tax Committee. Since 2013, he has served as a director and treasurer of the Centre for Public Legal Education of Alberta.

Penny has over 28 years of tax experience specializing in corporate tax, with an emphasis on international tax, corporate reorganizations, financing, and mergers and acquisitions.
