This award recognizes a CPA Canada volunteer for their leadership or contributions over an extended period of time. Such volunteers are active and productive participants in task forces, committees or working groups and have made a significant impact on the profession.

The winner will be announced at the CPA Canada Volunteer Awards Gala in Toronto on Wednesday, October 26, 2016.

Nominees

Dr. J. Efrim Boritz, FCPA, FCA, CA·IT/CISA

University of Waterloo
Committee(s): Information Management and Technology Advisory Committee, Information Technology Advisory Committee, Information Integrity Guidelines Advisory Committee

Efrim is the Ontario CPAs’ Chair in Accounting, head of the assurance area in the School of Accounting and Finance at the University of Waterloo, and the founding director of the University of Waterloo Centre for Information Integrity and Information Systems Assurance. He is also a member of the CPA Canada Information Management and Technology Advisory Council (IMTAC) and the AICPA task force on Trust Services and Information Integrity.

Efrim is the author or co-author of numerous books, monographs, book chapters and articles in academic and professional journals. He has served on numerous editorial boards, task forces and committees of the AAA, CAAA, AICPA, CPA Canada, ICPAO, IIA and ISACA, including a term as president of the CAAA. He was also a member of both the accounting and auditing standards boards and the former Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, from which he received its highest award, the Award of Outstanding Merit in 1999. He is a former member of the Accounting Standards Oversight Council of Canada. In 2010, he received the CICA’s Bill Swirsky Innovation Leadership Award and in 2012 he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Michael Ferguson, FCPA, FCA

Michael was appointed the auditor general of Canada in 2011. Prior to his appointment, he served for a year as the deputy minister of finance and secretary to the board of management for the Province of New Brunswick. Michael was the auditor general for New Brunswick from 2005-2010 and the comptroller from 2000-2005.

He was an active member of the former New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants, serving as the president, vice-president, secretary-treasurer and council member. Michael has worked with the Canadian Comprehensive Audit Foundation to help build performance auditing capacity in the National Audit Office of Tanzania. He is now serving his fourth term on the Public Sector Accounting Board and, in the past, he has served on the task forces on consolidations, employee future benefits and assessment of tangible capital assets.

Leo Gallant, FCPA, FCA

Leo was born and raised in Nova Scotia. He attended Saint Francis Xavier University (StFX) and obtained the coveted X ring in 1969. He then earned an MBA from Queen’s University before articling with Clarkson Gordon in Toronto and obtaining his accounting designation. Leo left public practice in 1973 to become a professor in the Business Administration Department of StFX, attaining full professor status in 1989 and being named dean of the Faculty of Business in 2009.

Over a 43-year teaching career, Leo has positively influenced a great number of undergraduate students and professional accounting candidates. Leo has consistently served the profession in leadership roles for close to 35 years. He has done so with professionalism, grace and good humour.

Leo embodies the principle of self-sacrifice. His contributions to the profession were made against a backdrop of service in leadership roles to his university, other professional organizations and his community. The breadth and depth of Leo's contributions are remarkable. What is equally remarkable is the humbleness he embodies and his belief in volunteering for the benefit of others. Leo volunteers for the right reasons and commits to any project or position he takes on.

Terry LeBlanc, FCPA, FCGA

Terry is the vice-chair of the CPA Canada Board of Directors. He joined the board in December 2013, and has served as both a member (2013-2015) and vice-chair (2015-present).

In 2010, he retired from his role as an executive with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) (1977-2010). Throughout his career with the CRA, Terry held various senior management positions, including assistant director investigations, assistant director audit, tax services office director, director intergovernmental relations (account executive for Atlantic region), and special advisor to the assistant commissioner.Terry’s board experience includes serving as a director and chair of the former CGA-Canada, several chapter boards and as chair of CGA-New Brunswick’s board, as well as serving on the CGA Maritime Region Student Services Board.

William J. McFetridge, FCPA, FCA

Bill is the chair of Canada’s Auditing and Assurance Standards Oversight Council, which oversees the development of generally accepted auditing standards in Canada. Prior to that, he was a member of the Accounting Standards Oversight Council.

Bill practices business law in Vancouver. He has over 35 years of experience providing strategic counsel and advice to clients in a range of industries, including transportation, marine, real estate, construction, maritime, wholesale distribution and forestry. Bill is particularly knowledgeable on the process of buying and selling businesses, and for the past 10 years he has chaired Legal Strategies for Business Acquisitions, designed for senior practitioners in British Columbia.

Prior to entering the field of law, Bill trained and practiced as a Chartered Accountant, a background that he draws on to deal with a variety of corporate and commercial matters. He has remained very active in the accounting profession and over the years has served on many committees with CPA BC and CPA Canada. For thirteen years he taught basic accounting to students in the Faculty of Law at University of British Columbia. In 2012, Bill was elected a fellow of the British Columbia Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Bill is also a Chartered Arbitrator (C.Arb.) and is recognized as a domestic arbitrator by the British Columbia International Arbitration Centre.

Murray A. Mikulak, FCPA, FCA

A graduate of the University of Calgary, Murray holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a CPA designation. Murray started his professional career in 1974 with Touche Ross & Co. and earned his accounting designation in Alberta in 1977. In 1983, he started his own practice and in June 2003 became a founding partner of Mikulak & Hill LLP. The firm provides solutions to the financial, accounting and taxation requirements of small-to-medium owner-managed businesses and high income, high net worth individuals.

Murray has 40 years’ experience as a professional accountant. Murray has been an industry leader in taxation and small business and has authored numerous presentations and articles in this area. His years of experience in the accounting profession are complemented by his extensive community involvement and service to the profession.

Patricia L. O'Malley, FCPA, FCA

Tricia was chair of the Canadian Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) from 2009 to 2010 and also served as its first full-time chair from 1999 to 2001. Supported by AcSB staff, she chaired the International Forum of Accounting Standard Setters, an informal association of bodies with a responsibility for setting or reviewing accounting standards in their various jurisdictions, from 2011 to 2016. Tricia was a member of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) from 2001 until 2007, and she served on its staff as Director of Implementation Activities from 2007 to 2009. She has been a member of the Canadian Actuarial Standards Oversight Council since 2012, serving as chair since January 2015. She has also been a member of the Canadian Accounting Standards Oversight Council since 2013.

Before joining the AcSB, Tricia was a partner in the National Assurance and Professional Practice Group of KPMG Canada, where she consulted on complex accounting issues, with particular emphasis on financial instruments and structured finance transactions. She has also served on numerous other boards and committees, including the Independent Electricity System Operator of Ontario, the Ontario Division of the MS Society and Assuris. She is also a past president of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association.

In 2011, Women’s Executive Network named Tricia to its list of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women. In 2012, she received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In 2016, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Waterloo.

Tricia completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree at the University of Manitoba and became an accountant in 1976. She was named a Fellow of the former Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 1991.

Jacqueline Poirier, FCPA, FCGA

Jackie was elected as president of the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA) in 2015 and will serve until 2017. She has been involved with CAPA since 2007, representing the former CGA-Canada association and subsequently CPA Canada after the unification of the Canadian profession. Jackie also chaired CAPA’s Professional Accountancy Organisation Development Committee from 2011-2015.

Jackie is currently the director of Nova Scotia Tax Service Office at CRA, a position she has held since 2010. She has held senior management positions in the Canadian government since 1997, including being regional director of Human Resources at the CRA, as well as being regional director of Human Resources and of Corporate Management at Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC). Jackie holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Mount Saint Vincent University and is a CPA. Jackie has been very involved in the accounting profession for many years, including serving as president of the former CGA Nova Scotia and as chair of CGA Canada’s Board of Directors. She has received various awards for services to the profession and the community.

Dr. Kathleen Ross, CPA, CGA

Elizabeth Wilson, FCPA, FCA

Beth is the managing partner of KPMG’s Toronto office, responsible for the operations of the Greater Toronto Area. She also leads the firm’s community leadership strategy as the Canadian managing partner, Community Leadership. She is a member of the firm’s management Committee and a member of the Foundation Board. She led the firm’s regions offices and private company practice as the Canadian managing partner – Regions and Enterprise from 2007 to 2009.

She was responsible for the growth of KPMG’s Enterprise Practice and the operations of 24 offices across Canada. While in this role, Beth was also on the KPMG international, global mid-market leadership committee. She led the firm’s HR team and the Employer of Choice strategy as the chief human resources Officer from 2005-2007 and was a founding member of the firm’s Diversity Council.Beth was recognized for leadership in her profession and community with an FCA designation in 2003; as one of Women’s Executive Network’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2008 and 2010; and with a YWCA Women of Distinction Award in 2015.

Nicola (Nickie) M. Young, FCPA, FCA

Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary's University

Nickie is a professor of accounting in the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary's University, currently teaching intermediate and advanced financial accounting. She has received teaching awards, and has contributed to the life of the university through membership on the Board of Governors, and the pension and other committees.

Nickie was associated with the former Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy for over 25 years in roles varying from teaching to program development and reform. She has been active in the provincial and national accounting profession, including serving on boards of the CICA (now CPA Canada) that deal with licensure, education and governance. She has also been associated with the Canadian Public Sector Accounting Board and many of its related task forces for almost 25 years.

Nickie co-authored five editions of Wiley’s Canadian Intermediate Accounting textbook and IFRS Primer: International GAAP Basics (Canadian and U.S. editions). Nickie is currently working on a phased retirement.
