The auditor’s report is your primary means of communication with company stakeholders. The AASB recently issued an Exposure Draft, proposing dramatic changes to auditor reporting in Canada to:

  • improve the information value of the auditor’s report by better explaining the auditor’s role
  • better highlight key matters arising from the audit
  • move away from a standardized one-page format to a longer, more entry-specific report

Proposed improvements would require the auditor's report to include:

  • discussion of matters that, according to the auditor’s professional judgement, were of most significance in the audit of the financial statements of a listed entity
  • statements about the appropriateness of management’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and whether there are material uncertainties that may cast significant doubt on the entity’s ability to continue as a going concern
  • a statement describing the auditor’s responsibilities with respect to other information included in a document that contains the audited financial statements
  • disclosure of the engagement partner name for audits of financial statements of listed entities
  • enhanced descriptions for responsibilities of management, the auditor and those charged with governance
