Tom Scott

Tom started his first term as a member of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) in April 2017.

Prior to his appointment, he served as a director and professor of accounting at the School of Accounting and Finance at University of Waterloo, and held positions of vice dean and professor of accounting at the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta. His teaching and research interests focus on financial reporting, with particular emphasis on the usefulness of financial reporting for understanding security prices.

Tom has taught at all university levels, published numerous research papers and received several awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for Contributions to Canada (2012) and the Distinguished Service Award of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (2009).

He was a member of both the Canadian Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) (2003–2011) and the Conceptual Framework Advisory Council to the Canadian AcSB (2005-2015).

Between 2008 and 2012, he served as the Alberta academic director for the Rotman School of Business Director’s Education Program.

Tom holds a Master of Business Administration Degree (McGill University) and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Queen’s University).
