Steve Wilson

Steve is an experienced executive with particular strength in strategy, corporate development, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), capital markets, operations, cost management and communications strategy. He has had broad experience over a 17-year career as a public company CFO.

Steve began his career in 1985 at Price Waterhouse where he became a Chartered Accountant. He went on to work in treasury consulting there.

After leaving Price Waterhouse, he served 15 years at Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., seven of which as CFO. Husky is a multinational, high-tech capital goods manufacturer headquartered in Ontario, which was listed in the S&P/TSX300 Index. It is the world’s largest brand name supplier of equipment and services to the plastics industry, with sales in excess of $1 billion. It operates in 40 countries with manufacturing facilities located in Canada, the United States, Luxembourg and China. Steve’s role as CFO was focused heavily on operations, capital investment and travelling globally to work with customers on project financing.

In 2004 he joined Shaw Communications Inc. and he retired in 2014 as EVP corporate development and CFO. Shaw was both a diversified communications and media company and is listed in the S&P/TSX60 Index. Steve’s role was heavily focused on strategy, business planning, corporate development, operations and investor communications. Transformative M&A transactions included the purchase of CanWest, Envision and ViaWest, in Denver, Colorado. During his tenure, market capitalization increased from approximately $5 billion to $13 billion.

Steve has served a number of not-for-profit organizations and held cabinet fund raising positions. From 2010 to 2016, he was a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Calgary. During his term he served on the executive committee, as the chair of the investment committee and the chair of the audit committee.

Steve is currently executive fellow at the Haskayne School of Business. This is an opportunity to use his experience to give back by taking his 17 years as a public company CFO and working with the academy to help develop curriculum, participate in teaching, serve as a lecturer in various accounting and finance classes, collaborate with Haskayne faculty on research, and serve as a mentor for students. This is a voluntary commitment with no remuneration.

Steve holds a B.Comm. from McMaster University. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants with the designation FCPA, FCA. Steve also holds an ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
