Shashi Fernando

Shashi currently leads BMO Financial Group’s Canadian Indirect Tax team. She has more than 15 years’ experience advising multi-national and national (public and private) enterprises in many industries regarding tax planning and tax minimization strategies involving indirect tax issues. Regularly advised on specific transactions, compliance, planning opportunities, and risk management, including Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST), Quebec Sales Tax (QST) and Provincial Sales Tax (PST).

Shashi is the co-Chair of the Canadian Banker’s Association Commodity Tax Committee, which is responsible for addressing technical and administrative issues affecting the banking industry. Recently, she became a Member of TEI Canada’s Commodity Tax Liaison Committee, which is responsible for promoting the tax interests of its members within CRA, Finance Canada and other tax authorities.

Shashi has been a contributing author to national publications such as the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) Commodity Tax News and CPA Magazine, and has presented papers and seminars on Canadian indirect taxation to clients, as well as for the CPA Canada Commodity Tax Symposium.
