Shashi Fernando-Eden

Shashi is a senior manager in EY’s national commodity tax practice and has been with the firm for over 10 years. Prior to joining EY, Shashi worked at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) in a variety of areas, with her last position being senior technical analyst in the GST/HST Rulings Directorate, Ottawa, where she provided written and verbal GST/HST interpretations and rulings.

Shashi has more than 15 years’ experience in indirect taxation and currently provides indirect tax advice and planning in many areas, including tax planning matters for resident and non-resident clients in private and public sector, cross-border sales and transactions, business acquisitions, corporate transactions and reorganizations, and general tax compliance and recovery matters.

Recently, Shashi has been working with organizations to improve their indirect tax performance with their systems and processes by setting up the indirect tax determination logic in the systems, by creating the corresponding transaction mapping, condition tables and tax codes as well as solving the gap analysis between tax engines, ERP systems and processes. In addition, Shashi has experience dealing with the CRA and provincial tax authorities in connection with tax audits and appeals.

Shashi has been a contributing author to national publications such as the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) Commodity Tax News and CPA Magazine, and has presented papers and seminars on Canadian indirect taxation to clients, as well as for the CPA Canada Commodity Tax Symposium.
