Hugh Neilson

Hugh is an independent contractor to Kingston Ross Pasnak LLP, where he’s a director in Taxation Services. He is also an independent contractor to Video Tax News Inc., where he is a member of the editorial board and appears regularly in their monthly video and newsletter. Hugh was awarded the Alberta gold medal and National silver medal when he wrote the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants’ Uniform Final Examination in 1990, and has practiced in the tax area since that year. He provides tax consultation in many diverse areas, including business structuring and restructuring, negotiations with Canada Revenue Agency auditors and appeals officers, tax-effective compensation strategies, and strategies for tax-effective personal, family and estate tax planning.

Hugh has instructed, authored and mentored courses for the provincial CPA Institutes in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in the area of taxation, and has presented at CPA Canada’s National Conference on Income Tax and The One conference, the Banff Small Practitioners Forum and CPA Forum North, both sponsored by CPA Alberta, and the Canadian Tax Foundation’s Prairie Provinces Tax Conference. His articles have been published in Law Now and Lawyers’ Weekly, as well as Video Tax News. Hugh is a member of CPA Alberta’s Members in Tax Working Group and CPA Canada’s Income Tax Education Committee and Small and Medium Practitioners Tax Committee, and a governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation. Since April, 2013, he has served as a director and the treasurer of the Centre for Public Legal Education of Alberta. Hugh is the 2014 recipient of CPA Canada’s Award for Excellence in Income Tax.
