CPA Professional Education Program: Capstone modules

Learn about the capstone modules that are part of the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP).

To complete the CPA PEP, you must complete six modules—two core modules, two elective modules, and two capstone modules. The capstone modules are culminating courses; in them you demonstrate what you have learned over the course of the CPA PEP. Both modules are common to all CPA candidates, and are taken after successful completion of the core and elective modules.

Capstone Integrative Module (Capstone 1)

In this integrative module, you will learn about team management and how to communicate in a professional environment. You also deepen your strategic leadership competencies by using the knowledge you have acquired in the prerequisites and earlier modules. You will complete a large business case, which relates to Day 1 of the common final examination (CFE).

Capstone 1 is primarily suited for formative assessment rather than summative assessment due to the linkage with Day 1 of the CFE. While all aspects of Capstone 1 are important to the profession, not all will be replicated on Day 1 of the CFE. For instance, oral communication, leadership and teamwork competencies will not be evaluated on the CFE, so we have integrated summative assessment opportunities for those competencies within Capstone 1.

You will be evaluated using these three key learning activities:

  • team reflections, which include individual reflections and peer evaluations
  • board report, which is the main content deliverable for this module
  • oral team presentations and question and answer period, which involves a panel and peer evaluation

You will:

  • work in groups to research specific topic areas and complete assignments
  • draft and orally present a business case
  • use their core and elective competencies while developing key enabling skills
  • be assessed on their abilities in competencies such as teamwork, negotiation and oral communication

Capstone Examination Preparation Module (Capstone 2)

This module focuses on preparing you for entry into the profession by requiring you to apply the competencies that you have acquired throughout the CPA program in complex and highly integrative cases. You continue to develop your enabling competencies in situations which simulate real-life projects and assignments that newly certified CPAs may encounter in their careers.

Candidates have no module-specific examination since it immediately precedes the national CFE.
